About the competition
The prestigious Maľba competition – VÚB Foundation’s Award for Young Artists – has been organised by the VÚB Foundation since 2006. Over the years, many talented artists have taken part in the competition, helping them to break through at home and abroad. The winning works are announced every year at the Nedbalka Gallery in Bratislava, where the final twenty is exhibited for a month.
Who is Maľba for
The competition is open to professional visual artists under 35 years of age. Painters enter the competition individually with a specific work created within the last three years. A portfolio with examples of their work is part of the application.

"I perceive the recognition of the international jury, whose opinion is also relevant beyond the borders of Slovakia, as a great personal success. The financial reward I received in Maľba has allowed me to experiment more and seek new challenges."
Žofia Dubová, winner of Maľba 2017
How Works are evaluated
The works are evaluated by an international jury whose composition changes each year. Members of the jury are active artists, curators, gallerists, art historians and art theorists. The international composition of the jury guarantees an unencumbered view of the paintings submitted and guarantees impartiality and open discussion.
The evaluation of the works is divided into two rounds. In the first round, the jury determines the final twenty, which is formed by adding up the points they have awarded to the works. The selected paintings are further judged in situ, i.e. directly at the competition exhibition, and the result is a joint consensus.

"Thanks to Maľba, I have gained the attention of art experts and the public. It is a beautiful initiative and it is admirable that the VÚB Foundation supports young artists."
Erik Šille, winner of Maľba 2009
Where to see the exhibited paintings
The competition exhibition of the best works is regularly held in a renowned Bratislava gallery, usually in the Nedbalka Gallery. After the winners are announced, the exhibition is open to the public. The works can also be viewed in the Exhibition section.
