Denisa Slavkovská is a multidisciplinary visual artist. She works with a broad spectrum of media, ranging from painting, drawing and classical graphic art to installation, performance and photography. Movement between media results from the character of her creative process, where individual forms combine freely according to the needs of the specific theme. Her works have their starting point in her personal experience; however, she does not remain on the level of autobiographical statement but opens up wider questions of corporality, memory and experience. Most frequently she expresses herself using the power of pure gesture; dominant in her recent works is biomorphic substance, which she varies compositionally. Slavkovská is interested in psychic states and intimate experience. Above all, she leads the viewer to an emotional and intuitive experience from the painting, while leaving open the meanings and enabling viewers to engage with them individually.

Her final entry Liminal Being (2026) represents a new register and a notable shift in this artist’s work. Slavkovská is turning towards a more concrete pictorial language, which she draws from the aesthetic of realism and the visual culture of pop art. The painting thematises the experience of temporary residence and life in rented accommodation, where personal objects become the sole bearers of human presence and identity. It captures the intergenerational experience of endless moving about – the banana boxes of the past are today replaced by the blue bags of IKEA, symbol of contemporary mobility and the provisional quality of home. As the artist herself says: “The theme grows out of the reality of rented apartments, where we bring only things warmed by the body, as small archives of days. Home lasts as long as the notice period in the renting contracts. In cleaned spaces I find proofs of humanity: threads in a cleared-out wardrobe, a map of dried leavings on a plate, fingerprints of an unknown person on a socialist door-handle. Silent still lifes without bodies bring a tension into presence, via detail. The reflexive black layer functions as a glitch and appropriates the reflected face of the viewer. The large format painting is a forensic record of a moment of disappearance of a generation in movement.” Slavkovská, via the painting, designates the experience of her generation, for whom removals and temporary functioning in rented accommodation has become the new norm. Home is no longer determined by a place, but by the objects which the person repeatedly transfers from one space to another.
